 Brocantes, Vide-greniers, etc.

For those addicted to, or just infrequent visitors of,  the various secondhand/antique markets in Basse Normandie, the latest edition of the little orange ‘Calendrier des Brocantes’ book is on sale. It covers all vide greniers, fairs of various kinds, brocantes, etc. for the year from February 2008 until January 2009.  I bought mine from the local supermarket and they are still available.

There are many events in the Orne during the summer months, especially on Sundays. Do check local papers and look for flyers in shops, etc., and often to be found on vide-greniers stalls at prior events.

The English Breakfast at La Ferte Mace on Sunday 16th March. An annual event held by the Jumelage Committee of La Ferte Mace (twinned with Ludlow in Shropshire – now in its 20th year). All bacon, sausages etc provided by an english butcher in Barenton. A good way to meet our french voisins and meet up with other english people. Look out for the posters in La Ferte Mace, and give it a try.

Just a quick update on the English Breakfast held in La Ferte Mace in March. It was another successful year, as we served 105 breakfasts. The weather was mixed, but this didn’t seem to deter people and our first customers arrived around 9.45am (all 11 of them). We had a mixed band of “serveurs” both french and english, so it was a good way to practice our language skills – some better than others! My husband and H arrived for their breakfast around 10.45am and then took on the mammoth task of washing up!! They used their considerable organisational skills to get the kitchen running smoothly, but after a short break, found 2 french gentlemen had taken their place, and according to them, not doing a particularly effective job. However, many conversations later, all was put shipshape and the job finished, I must say, to a very high standard. We arrived home around 2.45pm, with very tired legs and feet, but having had a really good time, speaking french for many hours, and actually being understood!! We hope next year to have a few more english people coming along, as most customers were french, and who were really surprised that ALL english ate a full monty EVERY morning!! I did try to assure them that we didn’t. Hope we’ll see some of you next year, always around the middle of March.
